Mitring
Fully formed Formica® panels with upstands can be jointed only by mitring, usually by precise sawing. Clamp the panel at the required bisecting angle. With a traversing saw, cutting into the face of the laminate, cut through the panel.
To prevent break-out of the laminate, the panel must be firmly clamped in position and the blade must be thick enough to avoid ‘whip’.
Scribed Joints (Mason’s Mitre)
To joint single profiled edge panels, machine suitable scribing profiles from the surface using a hand router with surface template. For panels over 40mm thickness use an overhead router.
Profile Fillets
Suitably shaped extruded metal or plastic profiles can be obtained to mask the joint; these eliminate the need for precise machining.
Joint Assembly
The joints described above are usually clamped together using hand-rail type bolts sunk into the underside of the two panels. The joint is bonded with a moisture resistant adhesive.
