Terminals and stations

Whatever the mode of transport, Formica products - whether surfacing reception points and service desks, in wall and door cladding, as elements of washroom and toilet areas, or in signage - can make the passenger's starting point both efficient and welcoming.

Busy main bus and railway stations, airports and shipping terminals, being in use virtually round the clock, benefit from the easy maintenance and wear-resistance characteristic of Formica materials.

On the land

Formica products work well as the interior hard surfaces in buses and luxury coaches; the variety of colours and patterns available gives the designer plenty of scope. Off-road service areas, being subject to demands similar to those placed on transport terminals, can employ Formica products to similar advantage.

Railway rolling stock is probably the most intensely-used and abused form of transport, and here Formica HPL and Compact laminates truly come into their own. Standing up well to battering by people and their luggage, they retain their attractive appearance for a long time.

Formica laminates have been tested in accordance with BS 6853:1999, which specifies the fire performance of materials used in railway rolling stock.

In the air

All the properties - surface strength, flame retardance, easy maintenance, aesthetic appeal - that make Formica laminate so worthwhile on land apply equally in the air. But in this context its excellent weight-to-strength ratio is a bonus. When every extra gram counts against economy, a material with such robust physical and performance properties yet so little bulk and weight quickly earns its keep.

At sea

Formica HPL complements fabrics and other surfacing materials to create interiors of the high standard demanded on large ferries and on cruise ships. The compelling designs and finishes in the The Collection provide a cost efficient alternative to real woods, metals and other natural materials for cabins, public lounges, dining areas, walkways and stairwells.

Formica products are excellent materials for high use areas, such as washrooms and bathrooms, that must survive the rigours of sustained humidity. Their properties ensure durable and virtually maintenance-free counter tops, cubicles and hand wash basins while retaining an attractive and high quality finish. See the Washroom Range.

Formica HGP grade laminate, appropriately bonded to a non-combustible substrate, meets the requirements for flame spread, heat release, smoke generation and toxicity specified in IMO Resolutions A653 (16) and MSC 61 (67). This grade of laminate has been granted Marine and Coastguard Agency (MCA) type approval.

Marine Certification Product Type Typical EN13823 Classification
All Formica HGP grade laminates are certified in accordance with IMO Resolution A653(16), amended by Resolution MSC61(67). • Formica Compact Grade CGF ≥6mm thick

• Composite panels comprising Formica FR laminate bonded to FR wood-based substrates
B-s2,d0
In Europe, laminate panels intended for construction applications are tested in accordance with EN 13823 (Small-burner test), and the resulting reaction-to-fire performance is expressed in accordance with EN13501-1.

Some specifications may refer to reaction-to-fire classifications based on earlier European national test methods: eg BS 476 parts 6/7 Class 0, 1, etc; AFNOR NFP 92-501 Class M1, M2, etc; DIN 4102-1 Class B1, B2, etc.

Well-travelled...

Formica Limited is proud of its long-established track record of successful product application in the transport industry generally, and in marine contexts in particular.

On land, in the air and on the sea, Formica® products have for many years proved both practical and cost effective for transport operators, and pleasing for passengers.

... and travelling well

Transport environments are a challenge for surfacing materials. Buses, trains, planes and ships operate in often turbulent and dirty circumstances; their intensive and often crowded use, with limited down-time for maintenance yet a need to retain their style and character, requires a special sort of material with high quality performance properties. This is what Formica products provide.
