Formica presents Laminates with an encoded message at the Berlin Transmediale

|
April 2008 |
| Formica, a leading manufacturer, designer and distributor of decorative laminate and other surfacing materials for architecture, furniture and interior design solutions, took part in the 21st Annual Transmediale, an international festival of digital media arts and culture, which was held in Berlin, through the work of Russian artist Olga Kisseleva.
|
Kisseleva’s work title Cross Worlds presented a bold, interactive installation that invited visitors to translate the encoded information in various areas of the building where the exhibition was held into textual form in real time.
To achieve this, the artist used electronic tags encapsulated within a digitally printed Formica laminate. The showcased images were pixelated bar codes containing a hidden message, that visitors could decipher by taking a picture with their cell phones.
As in previous years, Transmediale 2008 offered a wide variety of artistic offerings presented in the form of performances, presentations, conferences, workshops, installations and various events related to “digital culture”.
True to its commitment to creativity and quality in the fields of architecture, design and the arts as a whole, Formica participated in this prestigious forum and international showcase of communication between artists, media activists and the public, where the actual use of these new technologies was analyzed and their sociocultural impact was considered.
